GENERAL OPERATION OF FILTER MAT ODOR FILTERS

The odor filters are self-breathing odor filters used to control odors coming from sewage pumping stations, wastewater ponds and the like. The odor filter contains one or more filter bags or one or more cassettes that are filled with Oxi-beads or activated carbon beads or a mixture of both.

 

General application of FILTERMAT odor filters.

By placing the filter e.g. on or in the deck of the pumping station or basin, often on a vent, contaminated air flows, due to level rises, are routed through the filter.
The Filtermat odor filter was developed in part to combat nuisances caused by small or large amounts of H2S.

 

The effect of the Oxikorrels

Our Oxikorrels are a unique combination of activated alumina (Al2O3) impregnated with potassium permanganate (KMnO4 – the purple substance in the Oxikorrels) and a small amount of free water (H2O). It is produced in the form of light purple colored spheres with a diameter of approx. 5 mm.

A two-stage process takes place on the surface of the grains. First, the contaminated molecules are absorbed on the microporous surfaces of the beads. Then the odor-causing and corrosive gases (H2S) penetrate through the microporous surface into the pellet, after which a chemical oxidation process takes place by the reagents present in the pellets, without producing vapors.
The unsaturated hydrocarbons and organic compounds oxidize to CO2 and H2O. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S ) is bound in the form of potassium or manganese sulfate or remains in the pellet as elemental sulfur.
The spent pellets are harmless and can be disposed of with household, garden and kitchen waste.

 

Maintenance

When using Oxik granules on buffer cellar vents, one will generally not proceed to replace the granules until the filter begins to let through odors to a noticeable degree. How often this should be done per year depends entirely on the amount of air passing through the filter and the concentration of gases to be oxidized in it. The maintenance of a filter system equipped with Oxikorrels is limited to taking a sample of grains at regular intervals, after which it can be checked in a very simple visual way whether the grains are still active: at the moment that no purple color is visible anymore, the grains are finished; a number of grains should be crushed so that especially the inside of the grain can be checked for color indication. Occasionally shaking up the pellets gives better yields. In our new granules, the life span has been extended by increasing the amount of active ingredient in the granules and surface area enlargement.

 

Color Analysis

Fully purple : 100% operation. Brown in color : 80% active effect still present. All-white : 0% operation.
Color gradient : purple, yellowish, light brown, dark brown, black, gray and finally white.

 

Placement

The odor filters should be mounted on or in a horizontal surface (e.g., a concrete deck or sealing hatch) and can be mounted over the existing vent if necessary.

 

Designs and types

This robust type of odor filters are made of 316 (SS) stainless steel.
Among other things, our special purple Oxikorrels will bring H2S concentration below 0.1 ppm. The chemiesorption reaction gives a discoloration from purple to brown to black and white so that the replacement time can be easily determined. They also remove sulfur dioxide, mercaptans, amines, aldehydes, etc., making them excellent for treating gases in wastewater treatment plants. It is, of course, important to have sufficient contact time and product to achieve the desired result and acceptable tool life.
